Anne Rae Stewart Corner, 88, died on June 28, 2011, at the Memory Center in Virginia Beach, VA. She was the wife of the late Howard Cleveland Corner to whom she was married for almost 65 years. Anne was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and wife. She will be greatly missed and her love for her family will remain in our hearts forever. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Howard Cleveland Corner, Jr. and his wife Lynda of West Chester, PA, Nancy Corner Kennedy and her husband Joseph of Virginia Beach, VA, and Julia Stewart Corner of Beaufort, SC; six grandchildren, Amy Ann Boren Trask (Chandler), Heather Anne Kennedy Carr (Scott), Maura Kennedy Marks (Will), Joseph Brendan Kennedy (Meredith), Howard Cleveland Corner III (Bethany) and Jeb Stewart Corner; and six great-grandchildren, Tucker Fordham Trask, Julia Stewart Trask, Hope Kennedy Carr, Miller Scott Carr, Hathaway Belle Carr and Signe West Corner. Anne Rae is also survived by her sister, June Stewart McGehee (The Rt. Rev. H. Coleman); brother, John Stewart; and nineteen nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six siblings, Fred Stewart, Esq., George Stewart MD, Robert Stewart, Virginia Stewart Larmour, Elizabeth Stewart Hill, and Donald Stewart. Raised in Norfolk, VA, Anne Rae graduated from Maury High School and attended Longwood College. After World War II she and Howard relocated to Pittsburgh, PA where they lived for many years before retiring to Annapolis, MD. In 1985 they returned home to Virginia Beach. Anne Rae was a beautiful woman in every way. Even in her later years those who met her were struck by her bright blue eyes, her quick wit and her great smile. She delighted in children of all ages and she had a special gift for communicating with young people. "Grandma" spent many hours entertaining, reading and teaching the youngest members of the family, instilling in them her love of reading, cooking, and story telling. She created a lovely home, filled with all kinds of needlework and she passed these skills on to her daughters. She was proud of her heritage and belonged to both the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Colonial Dames of America. A lifelong Episcopalian, Anne and her husband were founding members of St. David's Episcopal Church in Upper St. Clair, PA and members of Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. The family thanks the staff of the Memory Center for the many fun activities, celebrations, spiritual support and comfort Anne enjoyed over the past few years and the loving care she received during her final days. A celebration of her life will be held at Galilee Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at noon with Rev. Andrew Buchanan officiating. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502 or online at http://www.alz.org/seva/.
