Antonio M. Cuevas, Jr., 45, of Oxnard, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, surrounded by his sister, mother and uncle. He was preceded in death by his father, Antonio Cuevas, Sr.
He was born in the Philippines on Nov. 13, 1965, and grew up in Manila during his early school years. He attended the Don Bosco Jr. Seminary for two years, and graduated from high school at Don Bosco in Makati, Philippines. He continued his education at the University of the East in Manila toward a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration. In 1983, he and his family moved to America, where he learned to adjust to his new life and country.
He was a very hard-working young man, meticulous and with great attention to detail. While he studied computer science and movie production at Oxnard College, he also delved into photography, and worked as an apprentice for Horace Bristol, a famous photographer for Life Magazine, who became his mentor. In recent years, Tony enjoyed working at Image Source in Ventura for nearly ten years.
Although not widely known, Tony also had a giving heart, volunteering to different organizations especially the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul of Mary Star of the Sea Conference in Oxnard helping the poor and homeless. Cancer initially entered his life in December 2006, and was in remission for four years. The cancer returned in February 2011. He went through intensive surgery and treatment at UCLA Medical Center and St. John's Hospital in Oxnard. Tony had a very strong fighting spirit, very determined and keeping high hopes of defeating his disease until the very end. He bore his pain and sacrifices with humility and courage. He will be missed more than he will ever know.
