Arthur Allen Libby III
Arthur Allen Libby III, age 73, of Annapolis, died November 8, 2011, after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joan Johnson, his children, Arthur Libby IV (and his wife Sandra), Paige Libby Bauman, and Timothy Libby (and his wife Kimberly), all of Annapolis; his grandchildren, A.J and Jack Libby, Alden, Amalie and Trippe Bauman, and Oliver Libby; and his sister, Martha Libby Calwell of Escondido, CA.

Art was born in Salem, Massachusetts but spent his early years in Marblehead, MA where he developed his love of racing sailboats. His family moved to Annapolis when he was 15 years old. While at St. Mary's High School, he taught sailing at the Annapolis Yacht Club. After graduating from St. Mary's High School, he served in the Navy for two years. He went on to earn a BS degree in Business and an MA degree in Government and Politics, both from the University of Maryland. His Master's thesis on the Politics of Historic Preservation was published and subsequently he was appointed to the Annapolis Historic District Commission.

He began his professional career at Union Carbide in Detroit, Michigan. After three years in Michigan, he felt the call of the Chesapeake Bay and they returned to Annapolis. He was appointed Director of Student Life at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. After five years and the successful graduation of the first class of UMBC students, he changed careers to the mass mailing business. He was Founder/Chairman of Direct Marketing Associates in Baltimore, MD. After selling DMA he became Vice President of Nationwide Fulfillment Systems, and AB&C Group in Northern Virginia, from which he retired in 2007. In addition to his other ventures, he and Joan have owned and operated Providence Marine Systems, a distribution center for Kasco de-icing products, for forty years.

Art is widely known for his lifelong love of sailing, a passion he shared with his wife and passed on to his children and grandchildren. He joined the Annapolis Yacht Club in 1972 and served on almost every AYC committee before becoming Commodore of the club in 2000. His sailing accomplishments were many, including winning the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association's high point trophy for success in the Pearson 30 class in 1998. He volunteered his time giving back to the sport he loved. He served as Fleet Captain of the Cal 25 Fleet, President of Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association, and various race committees. His Corinthian spirit and love of the sport was honored by a special CBYRA trophy, the "Art Libby Corinthian Spirit Award "given to a junior sailor who shows sportsmanship qualities on the race course. Art was a member of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake and the Fenwick Island Yacht Club.

He served on the Board of Directors of the Fairfield Nursing Home, Southwoods and City Gate Community Associations, and served as President of the Winchester on Severn Community Association.

Art swam on a regular basis at the Arundel Olympic Swim Center. He was known for his infectious smile and wonderful sense of humor.

A memorial mass celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Neumann Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 15, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis. Interment will be held privately in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the research efforts of Dr. A. Quinones-Hinojosa Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Neurosurgery 100 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21201, or AYC Junior Fleet, 2 Compromise Street, Annapolis, Maryland 21401.
