Mr. Arthur Lee "Art" Hirt, 80, of 120 Coquina Sands Drive, Waynesboro, PA died Sunday, January 1, 2012 in Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown. His passing was the result of a lengthy illness. Born April 7, 1931 in Watertown, SD, he was the son of the late Julius A. and Jessica A. (Boyle) Hirt. He spent his early life in Watertown, Minneapolis, MN and Scranton, PA. Mr. Hirt graduated with the 1952 class of Valley Forge Military Academy and Jr. College and in 1954 graduated from Gettysburg College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He and his wife, Eleanor M. (Gowe) Hirt, were married on February 10, 1951 in Scranton. They lived in Waynesboro since 1963 Mr. Hirt served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corp. He was the owner and operator of catalog stores for Sears-Roebuck Co., Baltimore, MD and Montgomery Wards, Waynesboro from 1965 to 1985. He was then employed by the Public Opinion Newspaper, Chambersburg, in their advertising department from 1986 to 1993. Mr. Hirt was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, where he served as a member, president and vice-president of Methodist Men. He was also a member of Exchange Club, Westminster, MD, Waynesboro Community Concert Association, Thurmont Dance Club, Gettysburg Cotillion, Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Waynesboro, Eagles Club, Inc., Waynesboro, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 731, Waynesboro, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 842, Chambersburg, was a charter member of Pen Mar Dance Club and volunteered for Hospice of Franklin County. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son: Jeffrey A. Hirt and his wife Barbara of Houston, TX; three daughters: Suellyn L. Crossley and her husband Gary of Orlando, FL, Cynthia L. Wiseman and her husband Faron of Canton, GA, Barbara A. Scott and her husband Tom of Walkersville, MD, seven grandchildren: Justin Wiens, Jamie Stup, Jenni Hirt, Tyler Crossley, Allison Scott, Evalina Wiseman, Ian Wiseman; a great granddaughter, Eva Wiens; and a sister-in-law, Martha Hirt of Townsend, DE. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Lewis S. Hirt. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, January 6, 2012 in Christ United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church Street, Waynesboro, with Pastor David Deatrich officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M., Thursday in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorial contributions be made in his name to Christ United Methodist Church, 100 S.
