Mr. Asher S. Edelman, Jr. 87, of 907 Park Street, Waynesboro, PA entered into eternal rest at 3:21 P.M. Saturday, December 10, 2011 in the Waynesboro Hospital. He was born on March 15, 1924 in Mount Carmel, PA; he was the son of the late Asher S. H. and Ethel (Hause) Edelman. He lived his early life in Hagerstown, MD. Mr. Edelman graduated from Hagerstown High School, with the class of 1942. He then received his Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from Lebanon Valley College with the class of 1949. Mr. Edelman served in the United States Army during World War II, serving with the 26th Infantry Yankee Division, under General George G. Patton, serving from 1943 through 1945. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart with Clusters. He also received the Soldier Metal of Honor, having rescuing a swimmer in distress and was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Asher was a machine gunner with the 1st squad, 1st Platoon, Co H 101st infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division of the 3rd Army. He and his wife of over 62 years, Mrs. Anita E. "Betty" Edelman was married on August 21, 1949 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Boonsboro, MD. They moved to the present residence in November of 1953. In his early life, Asher taught music in Rimersburg, PA and then in 1951 moved to Waynesboro and taught instrumental music in the Waynesboro School District for 35 years, retiring in 1986. Mr. Edelman also was a choir director for various United Methodist Churches and Lutheran Churches in the area; he also was the band director for the Wayne Band of Waynesboro for 47 years, retiring in 1999. Mr. Edelman was a violinist with the Potomac Symphony; the Maryland Symphony for 9 years and the Millbrook Symphony from its' onset in 1978 for 15 years. He also participated with the Mercersburg Community Chorus and many area church Cantatas. Asher attended St. Peter's Beard's Lutheran Church on Old Forge Road, Leitersburg, MD and was a member of the Musician's Union Local #720; Franklin County Chapter of School Retirees and the national AARP. He was a past member of the PA Music Educators Association, and the National Education Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Asher Edelman IV and wife Deborah of Kill Devil Hills, NC, one daughter, Emily Edelman Walsh and husband Daniel of Virginia Beach, VA, twin grandsons, Brian A. Edelman and Christopher A. Edelman both of Waynesboro, one sister, Mary Edelman Light of Carlisle, PA and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter-in-law Sara Henke Edelman and a brother-in-law, John H. Light. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 14, 2001 in St. Peter's Beard's Lutheran Church, 21348 Old Forge Road, Leitersburg, MD with Rev. officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599 of Chambersburg.
