Ashton "Larry" L. Payne, 77, died peacefully at home Saturday morning, November 14, 2009, after a battle with lung cancer. Larry was born in Gardner, November 19, 1931, son of the late Ashton L. Payne and Roseina (Riendeau) Sidman. He married his beloved wife Karen E. (Asunmaa) Payne, January 29, 1977. Together they shared 32 wonderful years of marriage. Larry proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Force, and in the United States Navy for over 15 years. Prior to his retirement he worked as an audio visual technician at Mount Wachusett Community College. Larry is a long time member of the American Legion Post 129 of Gardner, as well as the Ovila Case Post 905 Veteran's of Foreign Wars, Gardner. Larry was very active with the American Legion Honor Guard. He was also a long time sponsor at AA. Larry will be remembered as a "Mr. fix it." He enjoyed wood working, talking, socializing, and was always quick with a joke. He was a loving and loyal friend, who would always give to others. Besides his wife, Larry will be sadly missed by 2 sons; Samuel L. Payne of Los Angeles, CA, and Matthew C. Payne and his wife Kim of Gardner, and many nieces and nephews. Larry was predeceased by one brother; Clifford Payne, and two sisters; Leona Ballentine, and Dorothy Thurston. You are invited to attend calling hours in the Lamoureux-Fletcher Community Funeral Home, 105 Central St., Gardner, on Wednesday November 18 from 5-8PM. A funeral service will be held in the Faith Lutheran Church, 627 Green St., Gardner, MA, Thursday November 19, 2009 at 9:30AM. Rev. Scott Grimshaw, Pastor of Faith Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Glenallen St., Winchendon. In lieu of flowers donations in Larry's memory may be made to the Gardner Visiting Nurses Association Hospice, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440, or to the Mount Wachusett Community College Foundation for Veterans Scholarship, 444 Green St., Gardner, MA 01440.
