Austin Mitchell, age 88, of Amity, died Saturday, February 25, 2012 at his home. He was born on May 18, 1923 in Pike County, the son of Frank Mitchell and Ollie Sullivan Mitchell. On January 13, 1945, he was married to Louise Killian Mitchell who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Vina Holcombe and Marie Tolleson. Austin was a member and deacon of the Caney Valley Missionary Baptist Church. He worked all of his adult life in the timber industry, buying tracts of land and hauling pulpwood. After retiring from the timber industry, he continued working over ten years for the city of Amity. He is survived by three nieces, Patsy Burke of Pearcy, Thresa Hancock and Joyce Osborn both of Amity; his nephew, Danny Holcombe of Amity; seven great nieces and great nephews; numerous cousins; and a host of friends. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 29, 2012, in the Caney Valley Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Keith Howell officiating. Interment will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Visitation will be Tuesday, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Pallbearers will be deacons of the Caney Valley Missionary Baptist Church. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
