Barbara Dale Szumski, 70, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 5:35 p.m. in her home in South Bend, Indiana. Born in Muncie, Indiana on May 8, 1938, she lived in Indianapolis with her parents James and Kathryn Durnil until attending Butler University. There she met her husband, Ronald Szumski who survives. They were married on October 23rd and spent their married life in South Bend.

Barbara is survived by her mother, Kathryn Durnil; three sons, James of Austin, Texas, Andrew of Rockford, Michigan, Ronald of Avon, Indiana; three daughters-in-law, Kim Dabros, Diana Szumski, Roberta Szumski; 12 grandchildren, Michael, Jeanne, Don, Ashley, Kayla, Ryan, Kate, Reid, Johnny, Joey, Justin, and Jacob; her sister Kay Woelfel and brother-in-law, Robert Woelfel of Charleston, South Carolina. Both her youngest son Michael and her father, James Durnil preceded her in death.


Barbara worked at Holy Cross Catholic Church, The University of Notre Dame, and retired from St. Joseph High School. She received her Bachelor of General Studies from Indiana University, South Bend and was pursing her Masters degree.

Barbara was a member of Holy Cross Parish. She served the community in several capacities including Delta Gamma Alumnae Associations, Daughters of the American Revolution, Tri Kappa, Pan-Hellenic Association, Childrens Dispensary, The Antiquarian Society and The Service guild. She also served on the School Board of St. Joseph High School.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 14, 2008 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with entombment following in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2008 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a Parish Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.

She will be missed.
