Born in Lexington, KY, Barbara grew up in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, the daughter of Elizabeth Wilson and Jack Ritz. Majoring in philosophy, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Gettysburg College where she met her future husband, Walter H. Schumann. Barb and Walt enjoyed 51 years of companionship and love, living first in West Chester, PA, then in Claymont, DE, and finally in their farmhouse in Riegelsville, Bucks County, where they raised their three children, Eric, John and Lynn. Barbara was a journalist, a poet and an avid reader. Her love of language and her skill with words led to work as a stringer for local newspapers in the 1970’s and then as Director of Public Relations for Palisades School District. The majority of her career, however, was spent with Central Bucks School District as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. There she was editor of two in-house newsletters and the district’s community publications. Her skills with and devotion to her Mac computer were legendary, and her school district calendar won a PA School Boards Association award. Barbara prepared scripts for school district media broadcasts and wrote speeches for several successive superintendents. In addition, she served for many years as Secretary to the School Board, retiring from public service in 2004. Barbara loved the log cabin built by her parents on Farrow Lake in Topsfield, ME. There she spent 50 summer vacations with Walt and her children, and with her brother, Terry, and his family. She also shared that favorite spot with friends, inviting many to join her in the natural beauty and camaraderie of a Maine camp. It is there where Barbara’s ashes have been spread along with those of her parents. She is remembered by her many friends and colleagues who miss her jolly laugh, her clever wit, and her love.
