Barbara Schafer passed away peacefully with her family at her side on February 3, 2012. "Barb", as she was known by most, started her wonderful journey through life as the middle daughter of Travis and Helen Brem in Deming, New Mexico on September 16, 1942. In August of 1959, at the age of 16, she married the love of her life, William Schafer, and they spent the next 53 years together. Barb would tell you that her most precious and significant accomplishment was her two children, Kristopher and Kimberly of Albuquerque. This, however, would be an understatement, as she was a self-made businesswoman who, at the pinnacle of her career, owned 5 retail stores, including the Tangerine Treehouse Hallmark store on Juan Tabo and Menaul; and Krim's Hallmark on Gibson. Though she "retired" in 2001, she couldn't stand being idle, and soon found herself commuting several days a week to Santa Fe to help manage Kimberley's Hallmark. A passion for celebrating life was inherent to her nature. No holiday went uncelebrated, every birthday was remembered, and the changing of the seasons would always be reflected in the décor of her home. She was welcomed home by her mom and dad, and her older sister Sally Wilcox. She took with her the never-ending love of her husband Bill, her son Kris and his wife, Jan; her daughter Kimberly and her dog Allie; her sister Mary Margaret Radcliff; brothers and sister's in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Our grief is but the many years of joy that we remember. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gate of Heaven Mausoleum Chapel, 7999 Wyoming Blvd NE. Donations in Barb's name may be made to benefit the children of New Mexico; c/o Kirtland Federal Credit Union, attention Cheryl Burden, P.O Box 80570, Albuquerque NM 87198.
