Dr. Barry Michael Daste, a native of New Orleans and a resident of Lafayette, died on Saturday, January 30, 2010. Barry, aka Bear, was 66. Survived by his daughter, Bonnie Daste Miller, son-in-law Mike Miller, grandson Michael J. Miller , III, brothers Dale Daste, Dr. Daniel Daste, Joel Daste, Sr. Craig Daste, Sr. and sister Michelle Daste Garrott, his loving sweetheart, Jackie Carlisi, and many other family members. Son of the late Marie- Louise Roper Daste and Verdun Roger Daste. Preceded in death by sister, Valerie Andrews.
Barry graduated from Redemptorist High School in New Orleans in 1960, received a Bachelor degree from LSUNO in 1965, a Master of Social Work from LSU in 1968 and a Phd. from Union Institute in September 1996. He joined the faculty at LSU School of Social Work in 1971. He served several years as Associate Dean and retired as Professor Emeritus in 2001 and received the Distinguished Faculty award in 2001. He worked at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison as a social worker and was a volunteer with literacy organizations in Lafayette.
Barry was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, an avid LSU fan, scuba diver, enjoyed motorcycles and racing and was a member of the Bayou Airgun Club.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Funeral Service at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 10:00 AM. Visitation will begin at 8:00 Am. The burial service will be at Abita Springs Cemetery, Abita Springs, La. Please visit and sign the family guestbook at www.lakelawnmetairie.com.
