Mother Beatrice L. Jones, 91 of 128 Cedar Lane, Waterbury went home to be with the Lord on April 12, 2010. Mother Jones was born in Williamston, North Carolina on December 14, 1918 to the late Robert Floyd and Leetta Williams. She is predeceased by her husband, the late Deacon Suvalu Jones. In 1956, Mother Beatrice Jones along with her husband and their 14 “head” of children, moved to Waterbury CT. Upon their arrival to CT, Mother Jones, recognizing the need for her family to be in church, joined Little Zion Church of God In Christ where Elder Abraham Thomas was the pastor. The family were faithful members of this church until Elder Thomas relocated his church to New Haven, CT. In 1963, Mother Jones met the Late Bishop Dr. Tony Clemon, pastor of the Mt. Olive Church of God In Christ. Mother Jones heeded the call of God and moved the family’s membership to Mt. Olive where she was a member until the time of her death. Mother Jones was employed by the Uniform Service of Waterbury for over 15 years. Mother Jones was a faithful mother of the church. She was a prayer warrior, and could be heard throughout the church praying and interceding for the people of God. Mother Jones could often be heard singing the song “I’m working on the building, a sure foundation, holding up the blood stained banner for the Lord, as soon as I get through working on the building, I’m going up to heaven to get my reward”. Mother Jones served as the Pastor’s Aide President for many years at Mt. Olive. She was both reliable and accountable and always had Bishop Clemon’s best interest at heart.
Mother Jones was the State Mother of the Central CT Diocese for over 30 years. State Mother Jones worked on the local, state and national levels, working very closely with the late Senior Bishop WDC Williams Sr., the late Sr. Bishop Tony Clemon and Senior Bishop John H. Davis. In 1998, due to health reasons, State Mother Jones was made State Mother Emeritus. Mother Jones has left a lasting legacy. She leaves to cherish her memory; sons, Hayward (Gloria), Suvalu “Little Boy” Jr. and Robert Floyd Jones, all of Waterbury and Larry (Marionette) Jones of San Diego California; daughters, Reatha Sparkman, Lurline (Sidney) Sumler of Waterbury, CT, Dolores J. (Bishop Richard G) Gatling of Thomaston, CT Annie Mae “Tiny” Brock of North Carolina and Joyce Ann (Gladston) Fyffe of Atlanta, GA. She also leaves to mourn her sister; Leatha Williams Shield of Washington, DC; brothers, James Williams of New York, and Thailand Williams of California, brother-in-law, Percy Augustus Jones of FL. She is predeceased by her children: Cottie Jones, Percy Jones, Betty Warren, son-in-law Alvin Sparkman and her brother Luther Williams, brothers-in-law, Alfred, Jessie and Roosevelt Jones. Mother Jones was the PERFECT grandmother to 47 grandchildren, 83 great-grandchildren and a host of great-great grand children, nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends. A wake will take place on Sunday April 18, 2010 4-7 PM at Mt. Olive COGIC, 68 Berkeley Ave, Waterbury, CT. A celebration of her life will take place Monday April 19, 2010 at 11 AM. Interment is in Pine Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 66 Madera Drive, Waterbury, CT daily until the services. Services by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services 1287 Chapel Street New Haven, CT. To leave a message of comfort to the Jones family, please visit www.hkhfuneralservices.com.
