Bernard Joseph Weiss Of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2010, at the age of 85, following courageous seven-year battle with cancer. Loving husband of Marie (née Held). Bernie is also survived by children Laurie Rapkin (Harry), Jeffrey Weiss, and Jill Weiss (Glenn Davis), and his six grandchildren Alexander, Robert, Daniel, Ada, Ben and Hannah. Bernie is preceded in death by parents Sandor and Katherine Weiss (née Virag) and brother Donald Weiss (Marilyn). He is remembered with love and respect by his lifelong friends and colleagues. Born in Cleveland in 1924, he had a long career as a school superintendent across many states. As the senior author of the Holt Basic Reading System, an actor in community theater, and a soloist in Wisconsin Conservatory of Music recitals, Bernie leaves a legacy in book and song. Both as a WWII veteran stationed in Hawaii and as a consummate storyteller, Bernie leaves stories, in words and photographs, to be passed on through generations. As a husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bernie has touched us all with his generosity and wisdom. He has also made progress for the crusade against age discrimination in the workplace.
