I WAS VERY SURPRISED THAT A TREATABLE LOCALIZED
DISEASE THAT HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED EARLY HAS SPREAD TO HIS SYSTEM SO FAST. ITS UNIMAGINABLE THAT THIS TYPE OF CANCER WHICH IS COMMON TO MEN OF ALL COLOR WOULD SHATTER EVERY PRECIOUS HUMAN LIFE IN A BRIEF PERIOD OF TIME. WE ALL KNEW THAT OUR CREATOR HAS A HEAVENLY PURPOSE AND PLANS IN EVERY BREATH OF LIFE HE MADE. ONE OF OUR BEST FRIEND ''NONG'' NARDING WAS NOT AN EXCEPTION. THIS DREADFUL DISEASE OF CANCER CAN KILL A HUMAN FLESH, IT CAN TAKE THE DREAMS AND HAPPINESS OF A PERSON AND HIS LOVE ONES. BUT IT CANNOT TAKE AWAY YOUR FAITH, SHATTER YOUR HOPE OR LESSEN YOUR LOVE. IT CAN'T DESTROY TRUE FRIENDSHIP, NOR INVADE THE SOUL . IT CANNOT CONQUER YOUR SPIRIT NOR TAKE AWAY ETERNAL LIFE. ''NONG'' NARDS, YOUR JUST A SHORT STEP AHEAD OF US . WE KNEW THAT LIFE IS SO PRECIOUS TO YOUR FAMILY AND TO ALL OF US. BUT THIS IS GOD'S WILL, AND THINE WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. MAY YOUR GREAT SOUL REST IN PEACE WITHIN THE GLORY OF OUR CREATOR ''THE KING OF KINGS AND THE LORD OF LORDS.'' FAREWELL MY FRIEND.

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychiatry, wrote: "And finally there is the painful riddle of death, for which no remedy at all has yet been found, nor probably ever will be." Christians have victory in death and over death! Why? Because of the victory of Jesus Christ in His own resurrection. Jesus said, "Because I live, ye shall also" (John 14:19).

Flashback:
Uncle Ding was not only an uncle due to the matter of fact relationship through consanguinity, but was more than an uncle to me (us) because of his selfless care and concern to all of us kids (this was in the 70s) around him. Imagine an uncle bringing home for his nephew as pasalubong a toy remote police patrol car from one of his early sojourns abroad! that was during my pre-elementary school years in Bgy. Rizal, Jimenez, Misamis, Occidental! It was already a big deal to me because during those days, little boys like me (read: mga batang yagit) were mostly playing "sumoy" and "litik";

Uncle Ding's physical presence skips long and far in between (he comes and he goes unscheduled). A decade or so later i remembered being in the family's group going to MSU Marawi City for Virmi's foray into her first taste of what college life really is all about, so to speak. We stopped by Iligan City (Uncle Ding and Auntie Ester were still living in Ditucalan). Not a long stay, but it was there that i came across of the sport called "pelota".

Uncle Ding was only "heard" in the next few decade or so, never seen for quite a while, for his family by then already relocated in the Metropolitan Manila area to look for the proverbial greener pasture. That transfer, served as his family's launching pad into one of the most challenging episodes of his life as an overseas Filipino worker, living in foreign shores until they (Auntie Ester was the key here in this final push) ultimately landed in the United States.

Not too long Ago:
Uncle Ding and Auntie Ester would now come and visit the Philippines very often. An event that really stands out was the fact that when Osama Bin Ladin bombed the twin towers on September 11, 2001, our family was with Uncle Ding and Auntie Ester for a get together dinner in Project 8. We (my wife Malou, Ate Sherie Kay, Ate Mai-mai, and Vibeen), were quite a large group there, with Virmi, Auntie Norma, Rnel Pamaong and husband Amir, the Vasquez Family (Joy, Uncle Momoy, Auntie Jill), and of course, Uncle Tim Urbano and Auntie Rita.

Until the uneventful knowledge by a vast majority of the immediate family and friends that Uncle Ding was struck by prostate cancer. He would tell us that prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and that one in every 6 men in the U.S. will die because of the disease... He died exactly because of prostate cancer. He maybe absent in the body today but he is now present with the Lord.

If we take a look at I Corinthians 15:58, it is Paul's hymn of praise to the Lord as well as his closing admonition to the church. Because of the assurance of Christ's victory over death, we know that nothing we do for Him will ever be wasted or lost. We can be steadfast in our service, unmovable in suffering, abounding in ministry to others, because we know our labor is not in vain. The Apostle Paul sang a song of victory!

POSTSCRIPT:
TO BERNEL: The love of your Papa Narding (the best Papa that you can find) to you is, was, and forever will be extremely profound. You may not happen to appreciate it in the most intimate level that you would have asked or imagined, but we, the Nery's are not the most showy-type and excessively expressive when it comes to telling somebody that we do love them. I just hope and pray that the good works that the ever faithful Jesus Christ had started in your life, will be completed soon...

All this i pray in the mighty name of Him whose ways are very much higher than ours --- Jesus Christ. Amen.

I will fondly remember the Christmas at the Gutierrez's house when Uncle Narding had a $1 prize for anyone who played and won at his fun-time games. We will miss our family time together.

Our condolences to the entire Nery family.

Our prayers for our beloved Uncle Narding. May you rest in peace. We will surely miss you. Your kindness and thoughtfulness will always remain in our hearts. We will not forget the memories and the wisdom that you shared with us. We consider you as our second father.

To Auntie Ester and Bernel, our sympathy and condolences. We wish to thank you for loving and caring Uncle Narding. Thank you so much for your generosity.

I wish I could write more about Nong Narding, but sad to say I didn’t have the opportunity to know him personally. But I always hear good stories about him. My only communications with him were a few emails exchanges early this year. Though there was a time in one of his visits to Jimenez, during reunion with cousins, I talked to him over the phone, and I thought it was Nong Vernon, because they have the same voice. Wish

Dear Mare Ester:
Words are inadequate to express our feeling of loss for Pard's demise. Needless to say, our friendship spanned for more than half a century.
