Betty Weinberger passed peacefully at home on October 10 at age 77 with loved ones by her side. Betty and her surviving soul mate, George Weinberger, were married for 56 years. A loving mother and grandparent, she is survived by her son Lawrence, his wife Judi, their children Gregory and Daniel; and her daughter Ilene, Ilene’s life and civil union partner, Patricia and their children, Elizabeth and Lauren.
Betty was predeceased by her siblings Susan and Paul. Surviving relatives include her siblings Rachael, Bud and Harry, plus sisters- and brothers-in-law Jerry, Laura, Judi, Laurie and Ellie and dozens of their children and grandchildren.
Born in the Bronx, New York, Betty graduated from Taft High School. She was a homemaker before working as a bookkeeper in Manhattan’s garment industry. Betty and George moved the family to Teaneck in 1967 where she became a successful real estate sales broker. In 1985, she and George moved to San Diego.
A bright and energetic woman, Betty loved her charity walks, water exercise and Mah Jongg. As an active community leader, Betty was involved with charitable work since age 18, engaging others in community service. She worked with Veteran Services, various Mental Health agencies, Children’s services including adoption and March of Dimes, Jewish Women International, and Rachel’s House. An active leader in the League of Women Voters, Betty most recently served as moderator of pro-con debates between political candidates and disseminated information on positions held by all political candidates. Her passion for political and social service and justice continues on through family members.

There will be a private gathering of family and friends in celebration of Betty’s life and inurnment at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the March of Dimes or to Rachel’s Women’s Center of San Diego (www.ccdsd.org).
