BETTY JANE ALLGAIER Betty Jane (BJ) (Thompson) Allgaier, 57, of Sandown, NH died April 1, 2010 at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born in New Boston, NH, September 29, 1952, the daughter of Jane Shutz and the late Donald Thompson. After winning her battle with breast cancer ten years ago, BJ became a warrior in the fight against cancer. Beginning with participation in the Relay for Life of Greater Derry/Londonderry, of which she was co-chair for several years, her volunteer efforts led her to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. Through ACS CAN, BJ worked tirelessly in support of breast and colon cancer screenings, smoke-free workplaces, and other legislative issues aimed at making cancer a thing of the past. She testified before the NH Legislature on several occasions, and traveled to Washington DC to encourage her Senators and Representatives to support the fight against cancer. In addition to her volunteer work with ACS CAN, BJ was an avid lover of animals. She supported the NH SPCA, and traveled to Utah to volunteer at the Best Friends Animal Society. BJ is survived by her husband of 38 years Bob Allgaier, their daughter Amy Allgaier, of Dover, NH, her sister, Toni Thompson of Utica, NY, and her two beloved beagles, Ellie and Harley. SERVICES: There will be no calling hours. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, loved ones are asked to make a contribution in memory of BJ to Best Friends Animal Society (www.BestFriends.org) 5001 Angel Canyon Rd., Kanab, UT, 84741 and/or The New Hampshire chapter of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (www.acscan.org/action/nh).
