Mrs. Betty Jane (Smith) Topper, 88, of 148 West North Street, Waynesboro, died at 9:50 P.M., Monday, December 5, 2011, in her home. She had been in failing health for the past year. Born April 1, 1923 in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Warren Smith, Sr. and Anna Margaret (Wagner) Smith. She lived her early life in Hagerstown. Mrs. Topper graduated from Hagerstown High School with the class of 1941. She and her husband, the late F. Eugene Topper, were married on September 30, 1946 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hagerstown. They moved to West North Street in February 1953. Mr. Topper died on March 31, 2002. In her early life, Mrs. Topper was an orthodontic assistant for Dr. Moore in Hagerstown. Following her marriage she was a homemaker and enjoyed being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, Waynesboro. She was a former member of Beta Y Gradale at the YMCA and the Waynesboro Area Senior High School Band Auxiliary. Mrs. Topper was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching all sports on TV, especially the Baltimore Orioles. She is survived by two children, Cecelia A. "Kitty" Haugh and her husband Jim of Waynesboro and Thomas E. Topper and his wife Ann of Waynesboro; four grandsons, James A. "Jimmy" Haugh, Jr. of Waynesboro, David A. Haugh of Waynesboro, Brian Topper of Winchester, VA, and Steven Topper of Waynesboro; two great-grandsons, Cody L. Vallalonga and Brady Quinn Haugh; her childhood friend and sister-in-law, Anna Jean Smith of Hagerstown; her special caregiver, Donna Trace of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in by three brothers, E. Warren Smith, Jr., James L. Smith, and Nelson Smith. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, December 9, 2011, in St. Andrew Catholic Church, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro with Rev. John Bateman, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery, Waynesboro. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Thursday evening, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: St. Andrew School or St. Andrew Church, both of 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro, PA, 17268.
