Dr. Betty Joan Whitted, 78, of Ashland, died late Wednesday evening, June 17, 2009, at her home. Born November 30, 1930, in Brighton, OH, she was the daughter of the late Austin and Mary (Thompson) Ewell. She began working as an elementary teacher at Ashland City Schools in 1957. Betty also served as interim superintendent at Ashland City Schools from 1979 to 1980, at a time when female administrators were quite rare. In 1986, she decided to make the move to Ashland University as chair of the Teacher Education Department and eventually became coordinator of professional education and head of Academic Advising for the College of Education. In this capacity, she was the academic advisor to every education transfer student entering AU. Betty served Ashland University for 21 years and is considered one of the pillars of the University. It is not an exaggeration to say that Betty Whitted was the face of Ashland University for thousands of students over the years. During the May 2009 commencement ceremonies at Ashland University, she was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humanities. Throughout her lifetime, Betty also was very involved in the community, serving on the Ashland County United Way, the Ashland County Historical Society, the Ashland Friends of the Library and with the Presbyterian Church choir. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Betty was a mentor for many in the Ashland community and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her son, Tom Whitted of Port Clinton; two grandchildren, Matt (Dana Hetrick) Whitted, and Stacy Whitted; mother of her grandchildren, Vicki Whitted of Port Clinton; special friends, Joan VanOfferen of Huron, Amy Price of Sandusky and Mary Snyder of Port Clinton; daughter-in-law, Jackie Gleditsch Whitted of Austin, TX; three brothers, Dan (Sue) Ewell, Austin (Susie) Ewell, Jr. and Richard Ewell, all of Fresno, CA; and a number of nephews and cousins. Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Whitted in 1974; son, Tim Whitted; parents; and brother, Dale Ewell. Friends may visit from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 23, 2009, at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Andrew Gerhart officiating. Burial will follow in Brighton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 320 Church St., Ashland, Ohio 44805.
