Betty (Franks) Schmidt, 91, of Vernon, wife of the late MGySgt Raymond R. Schmidt, USMC, retired, passed away at Woodlake at Tolland on Friday, November 18, 2011. Born on June 25, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of the late Lewis and Hulda (Tomlinson) Franks, she grew up in Philadelphia where she met and married her husband Raymond of over 59 years. She lived a military life with her husband for 22 years. They lived in Camp Lejeune, NC, Alexandria, VA and Levittown, PA before retiring in Toms River, NJ where they enjoyed living at the shore. After Raymond passed away in 2001, Betty came to Connecticut to live with her daughter. She was an active member and Past President of the local Women’s Club in Levittown which she organized fundraisers for children with special needs, little league and the local library. She also was a member of the Gloria Chapter 159, O.E.S. in Toms River. Betty enjoyed crafts, games, crocheting and music. She sang in the church choir and donated a lot of time to church events. Betty had a great love for animals. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Betsy D. Lawrence and her husband Eugene of Vernon; two grandchildren, Michelle Strauss and her husband Thomas of Coventry and Eugene Lawrence, III and his wife Theonne of Kensington, and five great grandchildren, Nicole, Matthew and Heather Strauss and Austin and Athena Lawrence. Her family would like to thank Woodlake at Tolland and The Village at Buckland Court for the wonderful care that they gave to Betty during her stay with them. Her family will receive friends for a memorial calling hour on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 6-7 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon, followed by a memorial service at the funeral home beginning at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Betty’s memory may be made to an animal shelter of the donor’s choice.
