STOCKHOLM

Bo Holmberg, the husband of murdered Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, has died. He was 67.

Jan Eliasson, the chairman of the Anna Lindh Memorial Fund, called Holmberg's death "deeply tragic" in a brief statement. No cause of death was given.

"Bo was hit hard by Anna Lindh's death," Eliasson said, adding that Holmberg had been strongly engaged in the foundation's work.

Eva Franchell, a friend of the family who was with Lindh when she was fatally stabbed at a Stockholm department store in 2003, told tabloid Aftonbladet that Holmberg "died quietly in his home" on Thursday. She did not give details.

Like Lindh, Holmberg was a politician in the left-wing Social Democratic Party and held seats in both local and national governments. He stepped down in 2005 as governor of Sodermanland county, west of Stockholm, a position he had held for 10 years.

Holmberg, who married Lindh in 1991, is survived by the couple's two teenage sons, David and Filip. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.

Lindh was 46 when she was stabbed by a man who said it was an impulse attack ordered by voices in his head. The attacker, Mijailo Mijailovic, is serving a life sentence for the murder.
