Burton Asa Riter, age 95, husband, father, and grandfather, died in Salt Lake City on October 25, 2010. He was born May 14, 1915 in Salt Lake City to Joseph Bockholt Riter and Anna Burton Smith. He was raised on "The Avenues" and graduated from East High School. He attended the University of Utah for two years.
Burton served in the U. S. Army during World War II (1941-1945) as a combat engineer in the European-African theater. He married Shirley M. Nordberg on October 2, 1950 and had four children. He worked for many years in the grocery business, starting at Grand Central Market, then Buy Ryte Food Stores and Dan's Foods. He enjoyed mowing the lawn, taking care of the yard, golfing and being with his family.
He is survived by his wife, daughter Susan (Scott) Barker, and sons James (Christine) and Kenneth (Frances), 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings and his youngest son, Mark.
The family is grateful to Hospice and the Alta Ridge Assisted Living facility for the loving and personal care they gave him. Graveside services will be held on Friday, October 29, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. View Memorial Cemetery, 3115 E. 7800 So., Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
