Born on September 10, 1922 in Columbia, to the late Charles Guy Castles, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth White Castles, he was the loving and faithful husband of the late Leone Strickland Castles. Dr. Castles graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1942 and the Medical College of South Carolina in 1946. Upon graduation, he served his country as a physician in the United States Navy.
Dr. Castles dedicated his life to pediatrics and delivered outstanding and compassionate healthcare to his patients. He was beloved by his patients and by those with whom he worked. Dr. Castles founded Pediatric Associates, P.A. in Columbia in 1952 where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 1987. During his career, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Old Columbia Hospital and played a critical role in establishing the Richland Memorial Hospital on its present campus. He subsequently served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Richland Memorial Hospital for eight years. He served as President of the Columbia Pediatric Society and Co-Chair of the Polio Drive for South Carolina where he established a means to vaccinate children against polio in the school system. Dr. Castles was recognized by Richland Memorial Hospital for providing over 25 years of outstanding service and contributions to the profession. Dr. Castles served as President of the Richland Sertoma Club in 1960 -1961, during which time he established Sportsarama, which received national recognition. The Sportsarama tradition is still carried on today. Following his retirement, Dr. Castles remained active in the community serving as a volunteer with the Babcock Center in Columbia.
Dr. Castles was a devout Christian and was a faithful lifetime member of Centennial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, serving for over 50 years as a deacon, ruling elder and adult Sunday school teacher. Dr. Castles was a devoted Gamecock fan and attended football games and basketball games with his family for 53 years. Known as "Junior" to his golfing buddies, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed beating his son and friends regularly. Recently, at the age of 89, he shot a 79. He loved his family and enjoyed cookouts where he made his famous homemade ice cream during the summer.
