Cal Olson
Pulitzer Prize winning photographer, captured the 1957 tornado.
FARGO, N.D. - Cal Olson, a former managing editor, photographer and a member of The Forum team awarded a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of a deadly 1957 tornado, has died at age 84.
The Forum said Olson fell Wednesday at his cabin on Big Island Lake in Itasca County, Minn., and struck his head. The newspaper said he died at a Duluth, Minn., hospital on Thursday morning.
Olson's photo of a man carrying a lifeless child told the story of the 1957 Fargo tornado.
He served two terms as president of the National Press Photographers Association.
He joined The Forum staff in 1950 as a reporter and photographer, and was named photo chief in 1957. He later became city editor and, in 1972, managing editor. He left The Forum in 1978, and became editor of the Sioux City (Iowa) Journal. He retired 19 years ago.
