Captain Joseph M. Greene (USN ret.), died of natural causes on January 1, 2012, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his beloved childhood sweetheart and wife, Kathleen Haas Greene, and his cherished youngest son, Kevin. Born in Millville, New Jersey on February 13, 1922, he was just the second town resident to earn admission to the United States Naval Academy. Upon graduating, he embarked on a much-decorated 30-year career, primarily in the submarine service. At sea he captained the USS Corporal (SS 346) and the USS Neosho (AO 143). He also served as Executive Officer aboard the USS Bushnell (AS 15). On shore, his commands included the Naval Training Center (Bainbridge MD), the Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility (Portsmouth VA), and the Naval Ships Systems Command, Inactive Ships Division (Washington DC). Following retirement, he put his two master's degrees to work teaching military personnel for several years. An accomplished athlete, Capt. Greene excelled in basketball, baseball, and wrestling. He was a key part of the 1939-40 Millville High School basketball team which won the South Jersey Group III championship, an accomplishment so unique that the town honored him and his surviving teammates in a special awards ceremony some 65 years later. A devoted father, he managed to carve out time from his demanding Navy career to teach and coach his five sons on the baseball field and basketball court. The Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Antonio Spurs have never had a more loyal fan, and he was passionate about Navy and Notre Dame football. Capt. Greene is survived by sons, Joseph, Robert, John and Patrick; daughter-in-law, Susan; grandchildren, Meredith, Joe and Catherine; great-granddaughter, Ava; and too many friends and loved ones to list. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Gregory's Catholic Church Friday January 6, 2012 at 12 noon, followed by interment at Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. An Irish wake will follow at the Greene house. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Capt. Greene's memory to the American Heart Association. Condolences may be made to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
