Carl Loring Hedquist, 48, of Reading formerly of Wakefield died on Friday April 9th at Mass General Hospital in Boston after a nearly three year battle with head and neck cancer, he was surrounded by many friends and family. To Carls' wife and family, I have not seen Carl in a number of years but he was a member of our "Kirb's gang"in Melrose, the Mel-Wak gang, and the UMASS crowd as well. Carl was always smiling and he was the life of the party. He loved to laugh and I can remember how he found humor in everything. He was also a gentleman. The last time I saw Carl he told me very seriously that he wanted to settle down and marry the girl of his dreams. I will take comfort in knowing that he did just that. Sincerely, Johanna (Deane) True

Carl became a part of our Melrose neighborhood gang back in the late 70s. We shared a lot of laughs and good times through the 80s and into the 90s and saw each other occasionally after that. Others have noted the laugh, the distinctive voice, always ready with a story or a joke. I'm glad to hear that his awesome spirit endured even through his illness. I will miss Carl and hope his family can find some comfort in a life well-lived, if too short.

What a great guy! I met Carl on my first day of work at SBLI. My first real job out of college and he couldn't have been more helpful. Without my asking, he made sure I knew what to do and what not to do, who to listen to and who not to listen to and he shared with me little tips to help me be sucessful. He made speding 8-9 hours a day in a basement without windows enjoyable. I can still see him walking past my cubicle wearing his prized UMASS sweatshirt with the Boston Herald tucked under his arm. A booming voice, infectious personality and opinions on most every topic made Carl with a C one of a kind. My deepest sympathy to Shelly and family.

I have so many great memories of good times with Carl that I don't know where to begin. Starting in Junior high, Carl was the kid from Wakefield who hung with us Melrose boys. Always funny, he had a girlfriend, a car and good looks....what else could you ask for. Later on he continued to be a good friend, keeping up, visiting my restaurant and telling funny stories. I wish I knew what was happening, but Carl had a private side. So Sorry Carl! Paul

Carl, to one of my closest childhood friends growing up in Wakefield. We had a lot of good times, but as we grew older we seperated after high school. We'll always have the memories of having fun every day. You will be missed dearly and God bless.

A good friend from high school days, hanging out up at Kirby's...Strangely enough, I just rode in a small convertible on Friday, April 9th with my hair whipping around in the wind and thought of you, Carl and all the snarls I used to have to untangle after rides in the cool, little MG...A great guy then, for sure... sounds like you were a great guy to the end. Glad to have known you, Carl. Rest in peace.

I knew Carl from our days working at SBLI. I was lucky enough to spend several years in the next cubicle so we shared many laughs and stories. How can you ever forget the sound of his voice? So distinctive he should have been on radio really. Carl kept everyone there entertained but it was his integrity which made him stand out. He knew right from wrong and was not afraid to say so. "Carl with a C", as he came to be known among the other cubicle dwellers because he always made sure to spell his name for customers, was a guy you wanted in your corner. We kept in touch even after he left the company because that was the kind of person he was. He was always ready to promote the Angry Hill boys or tell me what was going on with him and I kept him up to date on the goings on at SBLI after he left. Carl became a new man however when he met Shelly. In retrospect, and it seems late in life now, he finally met his soul mate in you Shelly. Shelly we never have met but I feel I know you from talking to Carl and I am so sorry for all you have lost. Your time together was far too brief but I hope you can find the strength to continue on your journey with out him. Always upbeat even in the face of his diagnosis Carl was a one of a kind. An original in a world of copycats and he will be missed. My most sincere condolences to all who loved Carl Jay Mulcahy
