Carl Morris Detwyler
Greenville, SC
Carl Morris Detwyler of Greenville died November 14, 2011, aged 91 years.
He was born February 2, 1920 in Macon, Georgia to Ida and Carl Deadwyler.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joann Weaver Detwyler, and two children and their families, Carol and Walter Hinton, Kathryn and Alex Hinton, of Greenville, South Carolina, and Carl and Cathy Detwyler and Ella Detwyler, of Jackson, Wyoming. He is also survived by a niece, Anne Moore, of Eastman, Georgia.
He grew up in Dublin, Georgia, attended North Georgia College and graduated from George Mason University. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941, served throughout World War II in the Army Corps of Engineers and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. In civilian life, he worked for the federal government for over 35 years, initially for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and later for the Department of Defense, where he last served as a budget officer for the Secretary of Defense.
He and his wife moved to Greenville in 1994 and have been members of Westminster Presbyterian Church since then.
Services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome contributions to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Furman University, 3200 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29613.
