FERNANDEZ, Carmen nee Baez, 107, went to her heavenly reward Monday, January 16, 2012 after a brief illness. She was a beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Great Great-Grandmother.
Carmen was a talented seamstress and cook. She lived life with unbridled joy, doting on each new addition to the family with unconditional love. Born November 27, 1904 in Philadelphia, to Charles Baez and his wife Marie nee Penot. Carmen's family moved to Key West when she was 6. She saw Flagler's railroad make its dramatic entrance into Key West for the first time.
Since 1918, Carmen has been a resident of Tampa. Here she met & married her beloved Armando in 1923, and raised her two daughters, Alma and Irene. Carmen was a devoted mother, even pulling up roots to move to the entire family to New York for a year during World War II to help Alma in her pursuit of a stage career. She took a job in a fine ladies' wear store as a seamstress to help pay the living expenses in New York. Carmen was an avid reader and opera fan. She learned the art of cooking well from her mother. She served delicious bacalao, ropa vieja, versada, crabs enchilado, boliche, and she created the finest black beans on the planet. But her most engaging attribute was the most distinctive laugh in all history. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Ernest, her sister Marguerite Ayala, her daughter Alma Phillips and her husband, Armando. She is survived by her daughter Irene Lamb and husband Jean of Tampa,Grandchildren: J.
