Caroline L. Lawton
Greenville, SC
Caroline Lauchman Lawton passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, December 12, 2011 at NHC Mauldin.
Born in Catskills, New York and raised in Salisbury, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late William Albert and Adelaide Huntley Lauchman and the widow of Charles Hard Lawton of Greenville.
Caroline was an alumna of Catawba College, where she was recognized for scholastics, language, and acting abilities. After teaching a year in Churchland, North Carolina, Caroline married her sweetheart, Charles, who had been her seventh grade science teacher. They moved to Greenville in 1938 where she became a faithful member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church. She exercised leadership roles in Sunday school and Women's Missionary Union, writing and directing many dramatic productions.
Caroline volunteered at the Greenville Children's Home, and was a member at the Crescent City Garden Club, the Greenville Women's Club, and the Augusta Road Community Club. Her book "Cooking with Caroline" remains a testament to her culinary skills.
For over 40 years she delighted children as "The Witch of Oakview Drive." Each Halloween she regaled trick-or-treaters with her witches cackle while ladling soft drinks from a black pot on her back porch.
Mrs. Lawton is survived by her three children, Carol Lawton Freeman of Melbourne, Florida, Charles Hard Lawton Jr. and his wife Barbara, and Eleanor Lawton Bean and her husband Col. (Ret) Wesley Willard Bean Jr., both of Greenville and seven grandchildren: Charles "Chuck" Hard Lawton III, David Whilden Lawton, Jerry "Jay" Thomas Freeman, Jr. and wife Michelle, Michael Kent Bean and wife, Brenda, Steven Mark Bean and wife Susan, Dana Lynn Bean, and Wesley Willard Bean, III and wife Susan; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was pre-deceased by her brother William Albert Lauchman, Jr. and her sister Eleanor Ann Edwards.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of the Greenville Life Center and NHC Mauldin.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 15th at 2:00 PM at The Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive, with burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 to 7pm at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Miracle Hill Ministries, Pendleton Street Baptist Church Endowment or Catawba College.
