Carroll J. Clabaugh, 81, of Greencastle, died Saturday, December 24, 2011 in Meritus Medical Center, while surrounded by family. He had been in failing health for about six years. Born August 8, 1930, he was the son of the late Clarence J. and Edna (Griffin) Clabaugh. He spent his early days in Carroll County, growing up doing dairy farm work and working in a sawmill. Mr. Clabaugh graduated from Elmer Wolfe School, Union Bridge, MD. He served with the United States Marines for a brief time during the Korean War. He and his wife, Shirley A. (Shry) Clabaugh, were married April 17, 1953 in Keysville Church in Keysville, MD Mr. Clabaugh was proud of his work as a tool and die maker. He was trained in Black & Decker, and was often joked with for being the oldest person to ever go through the training. But he passed. He worked as a shop teacher at Thomas Johnson High School, Frederick, MD for about two years. After teaching he worked at Air Pax as a Tool and Die Maker in Frederick, and for about three years at Fairchild Industries in Frederick, and for about three years at Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown, MD. After her retired, he worked as a part time security guard at Jerr-Dan, Greencastle. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Union Bridge, MD, where for a while he taught Sunday school to the youth. He also volunteered at the New Midway Fire Company in his earlier years. Mr. Clabaugh spent most of the past six years in Golden Living Nursing Home, Hagerstown. During that time he most enjoyed the visits from his family. He especially enjoyed the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and always joked with a twinkle in his eye. His caretakers referred to him as "Pappy" and would often stop in his room to say hello. He loved to tinker around and was a great handyman. When his children were young, the whole family worked to build their own home in Union Bridge with the plans he made, each of them tending to jobs that he would delegate to them. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Judy Ann Carter and Linda Jane Frazier, both of Union Bridge; three sons: David Paul Clabaugh, Walkersville, MD, Steven Ray Clabaugh, Taneytown, MD and Michael Allen Clabaugh, Greencastle; seventeen grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters: Eleanor I. Clabaugh and Netta "Jane" Clabaugh. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 29, 2011, in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St. Greencastle. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, PA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to help defray funeral expenses. Contributions may be sent to his daughter, Judy at 11812 Houck Rd. Union Bridge, MD 21791.
