Casper L. "C.L." Mercer, passed away peacefully in his home on November 6, 2009, with his family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. C.L. was born on October 27, 1933 in Lumberton, NC to Casper R. "C.R." Mercer and Flossie Brisson Mercer. He is predeceased by his father, mother, four brothers, and one sister. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 53 years, Yvonne Hickman Mercer; son, Rick Mercer and wife Patty of Portsmouth, VA; daughter, Lisa Mercer and husband Danny Adams of Norfolk, VA; and the joys of his life, his grandchildren, Brooke and Connor Borkowski, also of Norfolk, VA. C.L. was a veteran of the Korean War, and retired from the Virginia State Alcohol and Beverage Control Board. In his retirement years, he loved to work in his yard, watch the Cowboys play, as well as NASCAR. C.L. enjoyed his daily visits with his friends at the Democratic Club in Ocean View, as he fondly referred to as the "watering hole." C.L. never met a stranger, and anyone who had the chance to meet him became a friend. He will be missed dearly by his loving family and friends. The Mercer family would like to thank the staff at Virginia Oncology Associates as well as the Sentara Hospice Staff who took such good care of him. A memorial service will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Monday at 11 a.m. Following the memorial service the family will receive friends at the Ocean View Democratic Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in C.L. Mercer's name. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

Yvonne, I am so sorry to hear of your great loss. I know how very much you and CL loved each other - the love does not die and you will feel his presence every day when you go out into your yard. I deeply regret not getting by to have that "cup of coffee" with the two of you!!! I just stay so busy but I now know that is no excuse and something I will forever regret. CL was a very special friend to so many of us. He will be missed. I love the both of you. When you are feeling up to having visitors I WILL come by for that "cup of coffee" with you!! PLEASE let me know if there is anything I can do. My love and condolences to you and your family. CL will live on thru Brooke and Connor. May God be with you in your time of sorrow. Much love, Sandi

I am wondering if this is the C.L. Mercer I used to know back in the mid 60's while working at the A&P in Chesapeake. If so, although I knew him only briefly, I often think of him with fond memories, his exuberent personalty was contagious. I know he will be missed. my condolences. Gary Williams
