Retired U.S. Navy Commander George Thomas Sinclair, Jr., died January 4, 2012, a week before his 90th birthday. Born in Atlanta, GA, he grew up in Charlotte, NC and lived there until he began his service in the U.S. Navy. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. During World War II he served aboard the USS Lansdale which was torpedoed and sank in the Mediterranean on April 20, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was assigned to the USS Harry T. Bauer that fought in the Iwo Jima & Okinawa campaigns and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. In the Korean War he was on the battleship USS Missouri where the peace treaty with Japan was signed. A three year tour in Hawaii was enjoyed by the family. He became the administrative officer for Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, Chief of Naval Operations from May, 1959-August, 1961. He had two other assignments in Washington D.C. with his final duty in Norfolk, VA. He retired after thirty years of distinguished service to his country. Among his other decorations he received the European-Africa Campaign medal with 4 stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with 4 stars, the Korean Service medal with 2 stars, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation in addition to many other medals and awards. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruby E. Sinclair; his daughter, Donna Seward and husband Lachlan Seward of Annandale, VA, his grandson, Jamie Seward and wife Kerin, and great-grandchildren, Mae and Ellsie of Arlington, VA; and two nieces. The funeral will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. at McKendree United Methodist Church. Burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery Thursday, March 8, 2012, at 1 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to McKendree United Methodist Church, 6870 N. Military Hwy., Norfolk, VA 23518.
