Cecil D. Gorsh, 87, of Victor, Iowa, was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 4, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
A celebration of his life will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 9, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor with Rev, Pastor Jack Andrews and Rev. John Sheda, officiating. Organist will be Tim Babcock. Vocalist will be Tim Babcock and Jolene Gorsh Babcock. Casket Bearers will be Jesse Babcock, Christopher Seiler, Jeff Gorsh, David Johnston, Frank Moore, David Gorsh, Gary Gorsh, and Jim Gorsh. Honorary bearers will be Raul Gorsh Meza, and E. Ulises Gorsh Meza. Interment will be at the Zion Cemetery near Williamsburg.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor beginning 12 noon on Thursday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Memorials may be directed to the Meadowlark Ministry.
Cecil was born on September 2, 1924, near Millersburg, Iowa to Frank and Ethel May Lacy Gorsh. He attended Pilot Grove country school near Millersburg.
In January of 1942, he was married to Treva Scandridge in Lancaster, Missouri. Following their marriage the couple operated a grain and livestock farm near Millersburg. In 1970, the couple relocated to South America and served as missionaries for three years. Following their mission work the couple moved to Victor and established Cecil Gorsh and Sons Roofing Company. He retired in 1992 and devoted his retirement to his family and the Meadowlark Ministry.
Cecil enjoyed participating in cornhusking contests, collecting pocket knives and antique pocket watches, reading and memorizing Bible passages, and trapping during his younger years
Survivors include his four children, LaVonne (Jerry) Gingerich of North Port, Florida, Jolene (Tim) Babcock of Victor, Iowa, Stan (Vicky) Gorsh of Henderson, Nevada, and Tim (Sue) Gorsh of Victor, Iowa; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vernita Nowotny of Victor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three sisters, Mabel Runyan, Mary Osweiler, and Mildred Moore; six brothers, Vernon, Alford, Russell, Lloyd, Charles, and Carrol Gorsh.
