Charles Bernard Dale Obituary

Charles Bernard Dale of Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Square, PA, passed away peacefully on July 12 at age 91. He was intensely interested in life as an engineer, lifelong sportsman, traveler, reader, thinker. Charles was born in Hanover, Germany and spent his early years developing his love of nature, hiking and skiing in the Swiss Alps on family vacations. As war loomed in the 1930's, Charles' family moved first to Great Britain where Charles attended Bedford School in Bedford, UK, followed by 2 years at Imperial College, London. The family later immigrated to the US where Charles received his B.S. from MIT, followed by a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Univ. of Michigan

Charles spent the majority of his career with the U.S. Dept. of the Navy, specializing in ballistic safety issues over a period of 25 years. Upon retiring, Charles enjoyed many years of active involvement in the community, volunteering for positions ranging from the Coast Guard Aux. to the Kendal Trails Committee. Charles remained extremely active into his late eighties - playing tennis, sailing, and hiking. And to the end, he retained his sharp wit, attention to detail, and formidable intelligence. He is survived by his wife, Rose Lawrence; daughters, Jessica Carr and Barbara Wall; grandchildren, Melissa Adeyanju, Christopher Carr, Megan Carr, and Matthew Carr; step-children, Marianna Cayten, Terry Lawrence, and Bill Lawrence; nephew, Dorian Dale; and extended family in the US, Europe, Canada, and Australia

.The family deeply appreciates the staff of Kendal at Longwood for their compassionate care of Charles over the years. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, July 28, at Kendal at Longwood.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Trinity Episcopal Church, 1108 Adams Street, Wilmington DE 19801 or to the Brandywine Conservancy, PO Box 141, Chadds Ford, PA 19317
