Charles Edward Duffy, 91, of Rouses Point passed away at his home on June 7, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was born in Malone, NY on January 3, 1922, the son of Francis Xavier and Minnie (Baylake) Duffy. A deeply religious man, his priorities in life were always God and family, and especially his English bride Ione, as they approached their 68th wedding anniversary. He was a veteran of WWII, having landed at Normandy on D-Day +2 with the 9th Air Force group… the first US fighter-bomber organization to be based on German soil. He was retired from the US Postal service although his long and varied career also included barbering, accounting, and teaching. His lifelong interest in learning included earning his BA in Philosophy, a Masters degree in Library Science at age 48, studying Latin in his 80's, practicing piano, clarinet, and saxophone, and playing any of his dozen harmonicas. He was an excellent chess player and once played the former world champion Boris Spassky in Montreal. He was also a fair pool player and enjoyed participating in the local 8-ball competitions as well as playing snooker in his pool room at home.
He is survived by his wife Ione (Davey), his children Colin Duffy and wife Nancy, Ronald Duffy and wife Joyce, Thomas Duffy, Veronica Orr, Paul Duffy and wife Susan, Mary Franke and husband Richard, Christine Snide and husband Eugene, and Maureen Young and husband Robert. He is also survived by twenty-nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law Bernard and Eve Duffy of Rouses Point, a sister Viola Chevalier of Connecticut, brother-in-law Ralph Gilpin, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter Rosemary Duffy, son Peter Duffy, son-in-law William Orr, grandchild Michael Duffy, brothers John, Francis, Gordon, and Donald Duffy, and sister Theresa Gilpin.
Calling hours will be from and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ross Funeral Home, Mooers, NY.
A Mass of Christian burial for Charles will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, at St. Patrick's Church in Rouses Point. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick's Parish in Rouses Point, NY.
