Charles Edward Gavin was born in Lake, Mississippi on December 26, 1933 to Henry Gavin and Beatrice Horne. He was the middle of three brothers Johnny earl and Jerry. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Laurel Mississippi, where they had a small farm that he helped out on, there he became very crafty with making things out of wood. Charles was educated in Laurel, Mississippi; he played a lot of sports while attending Oak Park High School including basketball and football he excelled in both sports. During his years at Oak Park he met the love of his life Earnestine Garner while in middle school. After graduating from Oak Park he received a four year scholarship in football to Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. Shortly before graduation and earning a degree in Education with an emphasis on Physical Education, he married his true love Earnestine on December 25, 1955. To this union two daughters where born Charlotte and Ramona. Chuck went on to play professional football for the British Columbia Lions, New York Giants and the Denver Broncos; he was a member of the Denver Broncos from 1960 to 1964. The 1960 Broncos team was the inaugural team; in 1964 Chuck had a knee injury that ended his football career. During the off-season he worked part-time as a Probation Officer with the Juvenile Court System. Later in his life Chuck was blessed with five grandchildren Tamara, Lakia, Shiniquwa, Shealean and Charles, II and four great grandchildren Joshua, Alexandriq, Gia and Ty'Ron. Once his football career ended, Chuck embarked on a new one which he very much loved he became a Juvenile Probation Officer full-time and was the only African American to hold that position at that time in the state. He worked at that position for many years. In the fall of 1971 Chuck was named the Director and pulled the now Gilliam Youth Center into shape, he retired in 1993. They say a lot of his implementations are still being used to this very day. Chuck was a fun loving man who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, camping and playing Pinochle at Hiawatha Davis Recreation Center and on his Computer. He will be missed by all whom where fortunate enough to have known him. He will be remembered as a kind man that cared and was concerned. http://www.denverbroncos.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/Chuck-Gavin-1933-2012/cdc7f6ae-7a65-49d1-8ebc-530fb5d3e688
