Charles Franklin Pavey was born to Geraldine and Guy Pavey on June 22, 1942 in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Alexandria, Virginia at their family home with his sister Sherry. The family home was on Little Hunting Creek that flowed into the Potomac River. Growing up he enjoyed fishing and boating. He was ambitious and as a child had a newspaper route that carried all the newspapers that were delivered to his area. He also learned construction by building houses with his father.
In high school, he played in the marching and concert band. He was in the percussion section. Charlie was one of the state of Virginia's top timpani players. He was offered a college scholarship to continue his education as a timpani player, but decided instead to study physic and mathematics. He attended Fredrick College, which is now part of the University of Virginia college system, where earned a B.S. degree in mathematics.
In 1965 he was drafted into the army. In 1967 he married Nancy Ann Lukehart, a friend from high school days. They started their married life while he was serving in the army. When he was discharged they moved to Alexandria, VA where he started his career as a software engineer. He worked for Computer Science Corporation.
While living in Alexandria, VA Charlie and Nancy's daughter Ann and son Tom were born. In l978 the family moved to Seminole, Florida. He accepted a position to work for E-Systems at their St,. Petersburg FL plant. Later the company was purchased by Raytheon. He retired in 2000 from Raytheon as Vice President of the St. Petersburg, FL division of engineers and as Southeastern Regional Director of Engineers.
Upon retiring Charlie and Nancy moved to Orlando where he worked for ECC, which was later purchased by Cubic Simulation Systems. He retired again and they decided to continue living in Orlando for their retirement. During his career Charlie was both a published author and an inventor. He has multiply patents registered with the U.S. Government Patton Office.
Charlie enjoyed traveling both with family and friends. He enjoyed playing games and was a very good bridge player. He was a fan of sports. He followed the ACC basketball and football teams. He also was a Tampa Bay Bucs fan. Charlie was always active in community service and church activities.
His true joy in life was his family. He was "the best father and husband"! We all will miss his kind, caring ways and his great sense of humor. He closely valued his friendships. He was a loyal friend and a wonderful man.
May 2, 2011 Charlie was diagnosed as Stage 4 lung cancer. After having four chemo sessions, 31 radiation treatments, and 4 surgeries it became apparent that he was not going to win his battle against cancer. Charlie came home from the hospital late November to be with Ann, Tom and Nancy. He received services from Hospice and the Visiting Nurse Association.
He joined God in heaven the evening of December 18, 2011.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy , daughter, Ann, son, Tom. and sister, Sherry Caldwell.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested you to consider a donation to further lung cancer research. A memorial fund has been established:
