Charles T. Hiltunen, 80, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011 in Indianapolis surrounded by his family. Born October 29, 1930 in Salem, MA. Charles attended Beverly High School and played as #7 on the fabled football team of 1948.) The team was one of BHS's greatest teams (the first undefeated and untied team in the school's history. He replaced his brother, Robert, as quartermaster on the U.S.S. Yosemite, then served during the Korean War on the Destroyer CJ Badger, which would become the basis of his many stories to school children, friends, and family about sailing around the globe and hanging on the bridge of the Badger during a hurricane in the Mid-Atlantic. He then went on to attend ITT where he was a founding member of the ITT Chapter of Phi Kappa Theta. He worked as a Plummer/ Pipe Fitter with Joslyn/Slater Steel for 33 years, retiring in 1996. Charles was an active member of the Korean War Veterans Association, where he marched in parades and spoke to school children about the war through the "Tell America Program." He was great with his hand and mind as he invented several items like book braces and golf aids. He participated in the Fort Wayne Golf Association and was the men's senior golf champion for 3 years in a row (2005-2007). He was a member of St. Henry's Choir, a Sea Scout and Boy Scout Leader. He loved his family and cherished his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife of 50 years Virginia Hiltunen, daughter Laurie (David) Wissel of Fort Myers, FL son, Charles (Nancy) Hiltunen III of Indianapolis, grandchildren Erica and Carlie Andis, Audrey, Shelby, Caleb, Elijah, Chad, and Brian Hiltunen, Tessa Wissel, Philipp, Kaitlin, Hannah, Micah, Gabrielle Caito, and Madelyn Wissel, brothers Clark, Robert, and Richard Hiltunen and daughter-in-law Dena Rae Hancock (P. Robert Caito). Charles was preceded in death by son, Brian D. Hiltunen, and parents Charles T. and (Lauretta) Hiltunen. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:00 AM, Saturday May 7, 2011 at St. Henry Catholic Church with calling one hour prior with Fr. Daniel Durkin officiating. Calling at D.O. McComb and Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Avenue Friday, May 06, 2011 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm & 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm with a rosary service at 3:30 pm.
