Charles William Nielson
1921-2010
Today, a man of honor passed from us.
With his wife and family at his side, Charles William Nielson, Salt Lake City, died July 1 of natural causes at the age of 89 years. His life exemplified the qualities of a true gentleman: civility among his friends, service to his country, integrity in his profession, and devotion for those he loved.
Born January 8, 1921 in Spring City, Utah, Charles was the only son of Maudella and Charles and Nielson. Upon the premature death of his father, his mother married Hugh Nelson, who proudly raised Charles as his own. His childhood was spent in the hills of Sanpete County, where he learned to herd sheep and work diligently.
In 1943 he married his own “Juliet,” by the name of Betty Vance. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the Navy, serving in Iwo Jima as one of the first troops to step foot on this battlefield. He was awarded the Purple Heart and uncomplainingly carried through life the scars and pain of his war injuries.
After two years in military hospitals, Charles and his wife, Betty, moved to Salt Lake City where they lived, worked and raised their family. Beginning as an apprentice draftsman with the State of Utah, he advanced to division manager for the Department of Transportation, retiring after forty years of service. An active member of the LDS Church, Charles served in several positions, including ward clerk and executive secretary, positions at which he was particularly adept and held for fifteen years.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty; his four children, Charles Nielson (Olga), Laura Johnson (Dave), Betsy Baron (Jon), and Paula Nelson; his brother, Roger, nineteen grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at the East Millcreek 11th Ward, 2702 Evergreen Avenue, on July 5th at 10:30 A.M. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon. Interment will be at Holladay Memorial Park, 4900 S. Memory Lane.
In honor of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness (1-800-683-5555) or on-line at http://www.blindness.org.
