Clara Belle Scott Godwin died in her home February 17, 2009, with her children by her side. She was a Durham native and the daughter of the late Janie Belle Harward and Sam H. Scott. Mrs. Godwin was predeceased by her beloved husband Hoover D. Godwin and brother, Harrison Scott. Surviving are her daughter Janie G. Tew and husband Milton R. Tew of Salemburg; her son Steven S. Godwin (USAF Retired) and wife Janet M. Godwin of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Scott, Paul and Dustin; and great grandchildren, Chandler, Chase, Logan, Kaydin and Avery.
Mrs. Godwin was a 1942 graduate of Durham High School. She retired from the Divinity School of Duke University in 1993, where she was Director of Finance and General Administration. After retirement, she was a member of Duke University Retirees Assn, serving as secretary and was a member of Duke University Retirees Outreach Program.
Mrs. Godwin was a faithful member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Durham, serving on the Board of Deacons and Board of Trustees. She was also a member of a Red Hat's Club, the Durham Woman's Club and Tobaccoland Civitan Club.
Friends may visit 5-7 PM Thursday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main St., Durham. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Friday in Pilgrim United Church of Christ, with burial following in Maplewood Cemetery.
