Clyde E. Best, Jr., age 83, a resident of Scranton Health Care Center and formerly of Moosic, passed away Monday morning. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Catherine Heintz Best, on March 12, 2010. Born in New York, New York, on Christmas Day, 1927, son of the late Clyde B. and Mary Moran Best, Clyde was educated in Moosic Schools. An Army Veteran of WWII, he had earned both the American Campaign and WWII Victory Ribbons. He worked for both Alperin and Goldstar Manufacturing before beginning his own business, Best's Market in Moosic, which he operated until his retirement. Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church, Queen of the Apostles Parish, in Avoca. A former volunteer fireman for the Moosic Hose Co., he always enjoyed spending his winters in Ruskin, Florida, with his wife. A fisherman, his favorite hobby was deep sea fishing. His family would like to offer a sincere thank you to both the staffs of Scranton Health Care Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all of their care and compassion. He is survived by his children, Clyde Peter Best and wife Patricia of Moosic, Edward Best and wife Keri of Laflin, Mary Ann Esgro and husband Dominick of Jessup and Janet Tibbs and husband Michael of Moosic; a brother, Joseph Best of Old Forge; five grandchildren, Dominick Esgro, Cathy Ferraro, Sandra Russomano, Thomas and Lauren Best; and seven great-grandchildren, Bobby and Dominique Ferraro, Dominick and Tommy Esgro, Nicholas and Lucas Russomano and Gavin Best. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Smerdon; and a granddaughter, Nicole Tibbs. Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 8:45AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with a 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, Queen of the Apostles Parish, 715 Hawthorne Street in Avoca, to be celebrated by Rev. Philip J. Sladicka, Pastor. Interment with full military rites by the AmVets Honor Guard will follow at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday between 5-8:00PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Clyde's name to the Scranton Health Care Center, 2933 McCarthy Street in Scranton, 18505.
