Clyde Richard "Red" Helton, Sr., 87, passed away December 6, 2011, in his home. He was born October 3, 1924, to Eva Mcallister and William Franklin Helton in Belmont, NC. He was predeceased by his first wife of 30 years, April Glee Heathcock Helton. Left to cherish his memory are his second wife of 32 years, Betty Jean Perry Foreman Helton; his son, Clyde Richard "Rick" Helton, Jr. (Cheryll); granddaughter, Dawn Vrhovac (Paul); grandson, Shawn Helton (Wendy); granddaughter, Erika Helton; two step grandsons, George and Travis Dodge; and three stepchildren, Kathleen Hassen (Charlie), Norma Andes (Bob), and David Foreman. He leaves 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren to remember their PawPaw. Clyde was predeceased by his sisters, Edna Helton Cline, Venny Helton, Lena Helton Warren, Floy Helton Harget, Edna Helton Cline and Betty Collette Helton Dimeo Sosobee; as well as his brothers, James Helton, Roscoe Helton, Perry Helton, Johnny Helton, Roy Lee "Jack" Helton and Henry Vernon "Bill" Helton. He served during World War II from 1942-1945 in the Army Air Force 321st Fighter Control Squadron in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Red worked in the grocery business for 70 years at BeLo's, Colonial Stores and Sun Flower (Mississippi), and he retired from Farm Fresh in 1989. As an active member of Norview Baptist Church, he visited many shut-ins. He was a deacon and behind-the-scenes servant for many projects, as well as an active member of his men's Sunday School Class. He loved his Lord and served him without ceasing. He was also a member of the "Five Pointers" senior group. At Norview Baptist, Red was affectionately known as the "Can Man." He collected cans and turned them in to recycle to buy coffee supplies for the church. Church members brought him cans every week, and his car trunk was always full. After he could no longer collect cans, he kept the church supplied with coffee on his own. He also made sure each week the "Onesimus Sunday School Class" had enough coffee supplies. Red was a very special husband, father, grandfather and friend and was loved by all. He will be dearly missed! The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 9, 2011, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011, at 12:00 noon at Norview Baptist Church with Pastor Michael C. Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Red's name to Norview Baptist Church Building Fund, 1127 Norview Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia 23513.
