Conchita G. Hartel, beloved wife, mother, sister, and aunt, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2012, surrounded by her loved ones. Mrs. Hartel, a native of Havana, Cuba, who had lived in New Orleans for nearly 51 years, was preceded in death by her parents, Concepción de la Torre de García and Miguel Guillermo García Valdés, and a daughter, Mary Teresa. Mrs. Hartel was born in Havana on August 10, 1943, and lived there with her family until 1961. That year, she graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Havana, and she and her parents and sister left Cuba for political reasons. She and her sister enrolled at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans. She was a boarding student there for a brief time, and it was during that time that she befriended the Hartel family. In the years that followed, she obtained from Loyola University a Bachelor's degree in secondary education and a Master's degree in guidance and counseling – both degrees with honors. In 1970, she married Stephen Camille Hartel, Jr., and they had four beloved daughters – Genevieve Marie, Mary Teresa, Rosary Nicole, and Stephanie de la Concepción. A devout Catholic, Mrs. Hartel was an accomplished pianist, guitarist, and vocalist; she was also fluent in Spanish, French, and English. Her true passion, however, was spending time with her family. Mrs. Hartel passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, after a nearly year-long courageous battle against cancer. She is survived by her husband, her daughters, Rosary, Stephanie, and Genevieve and Genevieve's husband, Matthew Thomas Brown; her sister, Susana García Foster and her husband, James Gene Foster, Sr.; her nephews, James Gene Foster, Jr. and Michael Edward Foster and his wife Maureen and son Aidan; she is also survived by her sisters- and brother-in-law, Mary Hartel Anderson, Rosary Hartel Harzinski, Joseph Francis Hartel, and their families. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, Louisiana 70124, on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, between 9:00 and 11:00 AM, and a funeral mass at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org/section_donate/).
