Hinsdale- Conrad Layman Kruse, Sr., 82, of Plain Road in Hinsdale, died Tuesday night, December 13, 2011 at Pine Heights Nursing Home with his family by his side following a brief illness. Mr. Kruse was born in Chicago on April 28, 1929 the son of Fritz and Jean (Layman) Kruse. He was raised and educated in Weston, Connecticut and later graduated from Antioc College in Springfield, Ohio where he earned his B.S. degree in Science. He later received his Masters degree in natural science from Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico. A proud veteran, he served his country in the U.S. Army stationed stateside just after World War II. He worked as an educator most of his career teaching high school science and math in Alaska and New Zealand. Mr. Kruse was a member of the Kiwanis Club while residing in New Zealand and was a past member of the Hinsdale Lions Club. With his wife he attended Grace Free Evangelical Church in Spofford. Of his pastimes and interests he enjoyed fishing, gardening, carpentry and operating his HAM radio. He was also an accomplished wood worker and builder. On December 21, 1956 in Dillingham, Alaska he was married to Carole Nielsen who survives. Besides his faithful and loving wife of 55 years he leaves, three sons, Fritz Kruse of Rawene, New Zealand, Conrad Kruse, Jr. of Murrieta, California, and Paul Kruse of Hinsdale, one sister, Joan White of Bangor, Maine and nine grandchildren. Additionally he leaves many nieces and nephews. In accordance with Mr. Kruse's final wishes there will be no formal funeral services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Kruse's name may be made to, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
