Craig James Garofano, 59, of 23 East Orchard Terrace, Adams, died early Thursday morning, December 20, 2007, at his home.
He was born in Adams on April 3, 1948, a son of the late Percy and Blanche (Lemanski) Garofano.He attended Adams schools, and graduated from C.H. McCann Technical High School in North Adams in 1967.
He was a decorated Vietnam Veteran, serving with the US Navy Seabees, from 1968 until his Honorable Discharge in 1973. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, 2 Bronze Stars, and several other citations and commendations.
Mr. Garofano first worked as service manger at KM Motors in North Adams for 10 years. He then went to work for Pfizer, Inc. and its successor, Specialty Minerals, Inc. in Adams as a heavy equipment maintenance supervisor, until retiring earlier this year after 28 years of service.
He was a former Adams firefighter, and was elected to the Alert Hose Company on August 2, 1977, serving until he resigned and became an Honorary Member on Feb. 7, 1984.
He was a communicant of the Parish of Notre Dame and St. Thomas Aquinas, Adams. he was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 54, North Adams; the Berkshire Beagle Club, the National Rifle Association; and the Mountain Club in Adams. He was a former Member of the Adams Turners and Adams Lions Club, and had been active in the Boy Scouts as a youth.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, mushrooming, the outdoors, and had been a member of bowling and softball leagues at the Adams Turners. He had also attained a yellow belt in Judo.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, the former Jeanne M. Cardinal, whom he married on May 2, 1970 in Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs Church, Adams;
2 Daughters - Gina DeGrenier and her husband, Kurt, of North Adams; and Jodi Spaulding and her husband, Jonathan, of Barre, Vermont.
8 Grandchilden - Zachary, Britnee, Mackenzie, Morgan, Chandler, Hunter, Maxwell and Calvin;
2 Brothers - Sully Garofano of Pittsfield, MA and Ernest Garofano of Naples, Florida; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews.
The funeral will be held on Monday, December 24th, at 11:00 AM from the PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St. Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12 Noon in Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs Church, Adams, celebrated by Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, Pastor of the Catholic Parishes of Adams.
Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams.
Calling hours are Sunday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire through the funeral home.
