Dalton Lee Burrus, 85, of Lovegrove Avenue, Chesapeake, VA, passed away January 22, 2010, in his home with loved ones at his side. He was the son of the late Almy D. and Lovie O. Burrus. He was predeceased by his sister, Lucille B. Mitchell. He was born in Pungo, VA. and lived most of his early years in Hatteras, NC. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Austin Burrus; a son, Terry D. Burrus and wife Janice of Suffolk, VA; two daughters, Linda B. Hawkinson and husband Bruce of Norway, MI and Donna C. Siler and husband George of Evergreen, CO; seven grandchildren, Darren Burrus, Sarah (Burrus) Smith, Casey, Shaun and Brent Hawkinson, Courtney (Siler) Sullivan and Mark Siler; eight great grandchildren; a brother, W.E. Burrus and wife Sharon of Florida; five nieces; and two nephews. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 in 1942, a veteran of WWII where he served in the Navy. During the war, he participated in five major invasions throughout the Mediterranean, Southern France and the Pacific Theater. After WWII he transferred to the United States Coast Guard where he served for a total of 30 years. After his retirement he worked for several years as right-of-way agent for the City of Chesapeake. Dalton was a member of the Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge for over 55 years. He was also a member of the Deep Creek Senior Citizen Club. He volunteered many years for Meals on Wheels. He was an active member of two travel Clubs—National Camping Travelers and SMART Cats. His passion was traveling, which included camping in 49 states and visiting Hawaii, Egypt, Venezuela, London, Scotland and Ireland. He also enjoyed hunting out west with his son-in-law, Bruce. The family will receive friends Monday night, January 25th, 2010, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Snellings Funeral Home, 1144 N. George Washington Highway, Chesapeake, VA. Funeral service will be conducted at Deep Creek United Methodist Church with Reverend Jonathan Bennett officiating on Tuesday, January 26th, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. Burial service to follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens in Great Bridge, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Chesapeake Regional Hospice, 667 Kingsbough Square, Chesapeake, VA 23320 or Deep Creek United Methodist Church, 141 N.
