Dan was a sentimental man with kind heart. He placed other peoples feelings and concerns before his own. Dan took the high road in almost all situations. Dan was bigger than life.

Our journey together embraces a human relationship and marriage of perfection; with all the shortcomings, emotions and tribulations. Our sons will laugh at the notion that our relationship has been perfect. I hope they understand the true meaning of my words. We are imperfect beings, that define the roads we travel, and endure or not.
What did we learn? Life is imperfect, complicated and fleeting. Love takes many forms. Dan loved life: his family, his friends, and his sons. His personality made him enduring and oh so frustrating. We all laugh and have stories to share.
We're told when we lose someone, we must find the gifts that come with their life. Dan had many gifts. Today we celebrate the gifts that he leaves us. We talked frequently of life and our afterlife. What does it mean? His belief, and mine, is that our eternity is what we leave behind; how we live on through those lives we touch and love. It comes in many ways. Stopping to help someone in need. Hugging someone when they need it. A word we may say. We all know what those may be.
His lasting message to those that know him were clear:
• treat others with compassion
• help others
• Cherish the earth. Love all creatures.
• Embrace those you love.

And most importantly, to our children, Reed and Bryant, and all our children, as you face the journey of life, Dan believed in your strength to face the obstacles ahead. His sons, his greatest loves, heard it many times. They know his words. Remember his words to you, always. Your words and actions since Dan's parting, are a testament to the impact you had on his life and his on yours. His greatest concern since you were young, is that you grow into adults with consciousness, happiness and avoid mistakes that can ruin your lives and paths. He listened to you, felt your hearts and knew the pain of growing in a very difficult world, surrounded by many temptations. Each of you have a story and memory, make that his legacy and his eternity. Learn from the man that loved you, counseled you, yelled at you and found joy in you.
Dan's gift to me. Love unconditionally. He loved me unconditionally, quietly and painfully. He showed his love in many forms. How blessed we were to have the gift of finding that love again, by acceptance of our frailties and understanding. His greatest gift to me is knowing I can be loved at my best and definitely at my worst. Dan knew all my sides. Our hope is that you have witnessed a life that is full of love.
And, finally, I'm reminded of one of our last conversations with our niece Deedi when she was here. Dan was telling her about when she was a toddler, we were sitting on our front porch when we moved to Albuquerque. It was very windy that night and it was somewhat scarey for her. As I talked to her, I explained it was old man wind who was very gentle and coming to share his wisdom. He was full of love. So, as you return to life today, remember, Dan is like "old Man Wind" reminding us of our goodness, and every rose and sunflower reflects the love he held in his heart for all of us and life. He is with us forever.

As our mothers were best friends, I knew Dan since the day he was born. I always loved his smile and admired his upbeat attitude. His family and friends have suffered a huge loss and will always miss him, but we have many warm memories to reflect upon. I'm grateful that he didn't suffer for an extended period of time.

For Cheryl, Reed and Bryant,

Our deepest condolences on the loss of Dan and truly it is a great loss. Jerry and I were always happy around Dan, constantly joking, having fun and laughing. I love the photo you chose for his memorial--that smiling face says it all.

Our entire family loved Dan very much and will always remember and keep him in our hearts.

Extending deep and heartfelt sympahty to you and the boys. We never lose the person we love. Their memory stays forever in our heart. I pray you find comfort in those memories.

We are so sad to know of Dan's passing, he will always remain in our hearts and we send prayers for him and his family. Will always remember his bright happy personality and his positive attitude toward life. He will definitely be with us in the sun rise and sun sets.

While I never knew Dan, I have known Cheryl most of our lives. I know that any man she loved so much must have been a very fine man indeed. Father to their sons, husband and friend. Such a great loss will be felt by many. It is good that there are so many wonderful memories of Dan for those who loved him the most. His life was much too short, but it seems he lived it fully. Rest now in peace.

A memory that springs up the most is when my Brother/Friend his son Bryant Hewes and I were in the 2nd grade and we were on a field Trip to the zoo and we were riding in the truck just havin a good all time and a song came on and we jamed out the whole day repeatively singing that song bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb bomb, we will, we will rock you, ha good times. anyways not much to say but he lived well and free. riding his bike up in the heavens.
