Brattleboro- Daniel D. "Danny" Russo, 85, of Southern Avenue, a resident of Brattleboro for over 50 years died unexpectedly Friday night, January 6, 2012 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. Mr. Russo was born in Bloomfield, Connecticut on April 30, 1926 the son of Anthony and Philomena Guerino) Russo. He was raised and educated in Connecticut later proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he was stationed in the European Theater of Operation. He worked most of his career as both a self-employed horse trainer at several racetracks in the tri state area and worked as a bartender for several establishments in the Brattleboro area that included Sportsman Lounge and at the former Colonial. For five years he owned and operated Alice's Restaurant then located on Elliot Street. He was a member of the V.F.W. Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034 and was a former member of the F.O. Eagles, Brattleboro Aerie #2445. In conjunction with his love for horses, he enjoyed spectator sports and was an avid Chicago Bears and New York Yankees fan. On February 23, 2002 in Brattleboro he was married to Debora J. Cook who survives. Besides his wife he leaves, one daughter, Danielle Russo and her fiancée' Gregory Ahoner of Hinsdale, two grandchildren, Samantha and Devin Clark, three step children, Kristina Cook and fiancé BJ Torres, Cassandra Whitten and Timothy Duff and partner Christina. Additionally he is survived by five step-grandchildren, a close family friend, Diane Beam and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister. In accordance with his final wishes there will be no formal funeral services. A celebration of life service and memorial gathering will take place on Saturday from 1 to 4 P.M. at the Hinsdale V.F.W., Main Street in Hinsdale. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to The Windham County Humane Society, P.O. Box 916, Brattleboro, Vermont 05302.
