David Hernandez, 66, native of Cidra, Puerto Rico; "famous poet" (Chicago's unofficial poet laureate) and educator, passed away unexpectedly February 25, 2013.
Beloved husband of 20 years to Batya Hernandez (nee Mandel); devoted "Popi" of Matea Flora Hernandez "Matty Flowers"; dear stepfather of Jeff and Chana Goldman; step-grandfather of Benita Goldman; loving brother of Sam (Lupe) Hernandez, Alma (Soloman) Wells, and Eliud (Frieda) Hernandez.
Faithful companion of Moonshine the cat.
Preceded in death by his parents Higinio Hernandez and Benita Garcia Hernandez and his favorite scrappy mutt, Lumpen.
A celebration of David's life and work is being held Friday, April 26, 6-9pm (service begins 6:30) at the National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W. 19th street
