David Doyle Vann, 63, of Hot Springs, AR left this life on Nov. 2, 2011, at the Burn Unit of Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock. He was born on December 24, 1947, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was the second child of Robert Doyle Vann and Katherine Lorraine Johnson.
David attended public school in the Hot Springs School District and graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and spent four years as a photographer, much of it at Westover Air Force Base, Massachusetts.
He spent several years as a traveling salesman for a restaurant supply company before returning to Hot Springs to practice his first love, photography. After trying his hand at aerial photography and taking pictures at Oaklawn Park, David went to work for the Hot Springs Sentinel Record.
During a career that spanned over two decades, several of his photos were acquired by the Associated Press News Agency and published across the country. His photographs of a Special Olympics event won a national award for David and his collaborating writer. David won many awards from the WEHCO Media Group. He spent much time photographing the Arkansas Governor, and subsequent President of the United States, Bill Clinton. He was never seen without his tan photographer's vest, with 20 pockets filled with film, lenses, gadgets and "stuff".
As he reached retirement age, a new passion gripped him; to own and operate an indoor shooting range. He researched, developed, planned and put the sweat equity into his creation, the "On Target Indoor Firing Range", which he operated until his accident.
David was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
David will be remembered for his gentle manner, big smile, and being always ready to help someone in need. His many acts of loving kindness are remembered with fond thoughts by the recipients. David was preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara Vaughn Vann, sons Kevin Red and daughter-in-law Winit, Andrew Kendall Vann, one brother, Robert H. Vann of Huntsville, TX., and two grandsons, Mason and Jordan Red.
There will be no public viewing. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. Saturday with burial following at Morning Star Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The David Vann Memorial Fund at any Simmons First Bank, Arkansas Children's Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House, or First Presbyterian Church of Hot Springs.
Visitation will be at the Vann home at 101 Penn Terrace at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Honorary pallbearers are Robert H. Vann, Robert E. Vann, David L. Vann, John Archibald, Danny Beacham and Buck Buckner.
