Deborah Lynn Westman Obituary

Deborah "Deb" Lynn Westman, 60, of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and beloved wife of Thomas for 35 years, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2013. Deb was born in Detroit on November 16, 1952 to Eleanor and the late Edwin Getner. She was the second oldest of five children. Deb met the love of her life, Tom Westman, during her junior year at Lahser High School in 1968. The two dated occasionally, but by 1972, they became inseparable. After graduating from high school in 1970, she attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit where she flourished, obtaining a Bachelors Degree in fine arts in advertising and design in 1975. This degree led her to become a freelance graphic designer, providing her services to dozens of local businesses. On July 14, 1978, Deb and Tom celebrated their love by exchanging wedding vows at the St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel in Bloomfield Hills. When their first child, Kathryn, was born on December 1, 1985, Deb found her true calling as a devoted mother, but also continued her freelance work. Shortly thereafter, their second daughter, Kristine, was born on August 10, 1987. Many of Deb's fondest memories include time spent together with her close family and friends. Beyond this, gardening and working with computers were her true passion. Deb reentered the workforce once the children grew old enough, but didn't stray far. In 1997, she began what would turn into a 15-year stint at Lahser High School as a computer technician and webmaster; she had rejoined the Lahser family. Deb greeted everyone with an infectious smile from ear-to-ear, and she never met anyone she didn't like. Her positive attitude and enthusiasm toward life demonstrated to us all how to live life to the fullest. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Thomas, and two children: Kathryn Skerske (Marcus), Kristine Rosychuk (Warren), and her favorite canine companion, Darby. Cherished daughter of Eleanor Getner (the late Edwin) and dear sister of Sharon Teper, Pamela Getner, Victoria Getner and Christopher Getner (Cindy). Also survived by 5 nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 22, 2013 from 3-8 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home 2600 Crooks Road, Troy (between Maple & Big Beaver). A memorial with scripture and reflections will take place at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills 48304. Visitation begins at the church at 10:30 a.m. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy in Deb's memory are asked to consider Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C): http://www.standup2cancer.org.
